How to transfer PPF account from one branch to the other of ( bank or post office)?

Any PPF account is transferable across any branch of the bank or to the head post office free of charge and, thus, you will not lose any amount on account of this transfer.

PPF Transfer is possible from a branch of bank to the post office and from a post office to the branch. However, it is not possible to do transfer from an individual to another.

The process to transfer is very simple, All you need to do is to fill up a PPF account transfer application (written request) to your  bank branch/post office, submit it along with your PPF passbook. (Don't forget to take the photo copies before submitting application and your PPF pass book)

  6. Hello Anonymous,

The best solution for this is to transfer your Bank of Baroda PPF account to SBI Branch.

There is no option to prematurely close a PPF account before the mandatory period of 15 years, except in case of death of the account holder. You have an option to borrow or partially withdraw from your PPF account subject to some restrictions.

How long is the lock-in period?
The maturity period is 15 years from the close of the financial year in which the initial subscription was made. At the end of this period, you get the entire amount (principal and interest earned).

The maturity date depends on the financial year, not on the date of its opening.

You can't able to close your Current PPF account in Bank of Baroda., you will have to continue the same, with the minimum contribution of Rs 500 if you do not wish to invest more.
After competion of 15 years, you can close and open new account in any other branch.

    How many PPF one have???
You can have only one PPF account in your name. If, at any point, it is detected that you have two accounts, the second account you have opened will be closed, and you will be refunded only the principal amount, not the interest.

I just wanted to know about my funds. After the completion of lock in period can i close my BOB account and transfer the accumulated funds to the newly opened SBI account ?
Or will have to start with zero balance ?

    2. Hi again,

You can't able to transfer full accumulated funds to the newly opened SBI PPF Account
as your SBI account will be treated as new PPF account and will follow similar rules that is the maximum investment limit for any financial year will be Rs. 1,00,000..

  7. Hi Vj,

When you open an account, you will be given a passbook in which all subscriptions, interest accrued, withdrawals and loans are recorded.

If you don't have pass book, ask for the same from your PNB Bank Branch, as why pass book for PPF account in not given to you????

  12. Who will pay interest in case of transfer of ppf account from one bank to another??

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi Dinesh,

I remember when i visited BOB PF branch in feb 2011 and requested for transfer of my PPF account, the bank person suggested me to wait for year end and then do the transfer, as you know interest is credited to the account on March 31 every year.
I did the transfer in month of June 2011 and then deposited amount in my PPF account in new branch.
As 31st March is passed and i hope interest amount is credited to your PPF account, so this is best time to do the transfer.
(About calculation, i really don't know how it is calculated in case of transfer, but i still remember the bank person said to me if you transfer before 31st march, you will not receive any interest for that financial year...

    1. Dinesh,

As a normal practice the interest will be calculated on the lowest balance in the account between the close of the fifth day and the end of the month. The interest is credited into the account at the end of each year means 31st march every year...

  14. After Transfer is processed successfully, the interest amount is paid by new PPF bank branch.
As i updated the PPF and i got interest showing credited.

  16. A person can have only one account in his name.
There can be only 1 account be it either in Post Office or SBI Bank.

If, at any point, it is detected by the authorities that you have two accounts, the second account you have opened will be closed. You will be refunded only the principal amount or deposited money (not the interest).

When two PPF accounts are allowed

You can open 2 PPF accounts - one in your name and another in the name of your minor child (with you as the guardian).

However, The aggregate limit of Rs 1,00,000 is for the account of an individual and minor combined together.

Yes, it is possible to transfer PPF from one state to another.
Before transfer, confirm from PPF branch where you want to do the transfer, whether they have PPF facility.
You don't need to go in person, even that work can be done on your behalf by your close one.

    1. Hi Anjana,

      Very sorry for late reply.

First thing it is not possible to transfer your PPF account online, you need to visit your branch or send some one on your behalf to get the work done (if you send signed written request along with your PPF Pass Book)

What you can do now, visit SBI bank in Delhi and ask if you can deposit money in your PPF account you have in Bangalore, if they say yes and give you acknowledgment, then great, you can have proof of investment for this year.

If you have online access to your sbi bank and ppf account you can connect and transfer.

Now first priority is get proof for this year before December, once subscription is made for this year then you think of transfer.

My suggestion do the transfer in month of April 2013 as if you do now, you will not get interest for this year, that is what is told to me, when i had visited my branch for transfer.

About PPF Interest credit: Interest gets credited 31st march every year.

    1. Your PPF Account Opening date will be considered for loan eligibility.
(initial PPF opening date and not transfer date)

Loans can be availed from the third financial year excluding the year of deposit.

The rate of interest charged on loan taken by the subscriber of a PPF account on or after 01.12.2011 shall be 2% p.a.

Amount of such loans must not exceed 25 percent of the amount that stood to the account holder's credit at the end of the second year immediately preceding the year in which the loan is applied for.

    1. Hi,

      Thank you.
First thing need to check whether you can withdraw from PPF account or not?

The PPF Rule related to withdrawal
Any time after the expiry of five years from the end of the financial year in which the initial subscription was made , a subscriber can partially withdraw, if he so desires, apply in Form C or as near thereto as possible, together with his pass book to the Accounts Office withdrawing from the balance to his credit, an amount not exceeding fifty per cent of the amount that stood to his credit at the end of the forth year immediately preceding the year of withdrawal or at the end of preceding year, whichever is lower, less the amount of loan, (if any).
only one withdrawal is allowed per financial year.

      Delete
    2. As you completed five years, so you are eligible for withdrawal.
Visit your PPF branch with pass book, they will guide you more as how much you can withdraw.

      2. Before giving application to SBI MANINAGAR, Please check having PPF facility in their branch.

Transfer is allowed, please check with them why they are refusing the transfer request.

After tranfer you will receive confirmation from both the banks in the form of letter, plus call from new PPF Branch to collect ppf pass book.

Even if you visit bank for cheque collection, they will not give you and request you to wait and cheque will be sent directly by them to new ppf branch.

Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

      Coming back to your query,
No, saving bank account is not required, if you want to tranfer your ppf account.

My case i was having ppf account in bank of baroda, but was not having bank account with them, then i tranfered my ppf account in sbi bank and was not having sole bank account in sbi bank, but was having joint bank account and as third account holder.

So you can open ppf account without opening bank account.

But in case you need online access to your ppf account, in such case bank account in required preferably sole that is single bank account holder.
